Texas

Texas was the first state to collaborate with the Dana Center on the ambitious goal of implementing mathematics pathways as a statewide effort. This bold initiative helped build national awareness of the importance of mathematics pathways to a student success agenda.

Welcome

The Dana Center Mathematics Pathways model engages strategic collaborators at the state, regional, institutional, and classroom levels to ensure that ALL students in higher education enroll in mathematics pathways that are aligned to students’ programs of study and relevant to their future aspirations. Mathematics pathways are a vehicle enabling students to make timely progress towards degree completion and upward economic mobility.

To help achieve this mission, the Dana Center provides faculty, staff, administrators, and policy representatives with the resources, tools, and services necessary to implement high–quality mathematics pathways in Texas.

Leading the Way

In 2012, the Charles A. Dana Center launched mathematics pathways work in Texas with the New Mathways Project (NMP), a joint enterprise with the Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC). The presidents and chancellors of all the state’s fifty community college systems agreed to support this ambitious undertaking, which called for reform of developmental and gateway mathematics. In 2016, the New Mathways Projects was rechristened the Dana Center Mathematics Pathways (DCMP) to reflect the changing landscape in which mathematics pathways are no longer a "new" or experimental project.

Texas is the place where the DCMP was born and fully developed in collaboration with our partners in the state. The DCMP now has an established history of providing extremely effective, experience–based services to Texas colleges and universities of all sizes. Mathematics pathways gives their students more equitable access to highly–effective, rigorous math education. Students are achieving their goals in higher numbers as they complete a math course that prepares them for their future professional and personal lives. We are excited to see the deep and broad implementation of math pathways as these colleges and universities support the success of all students including their most vulnerable student populations.

Highlights

  • Recognizing Exemplary Pathways Work

  • Co–requisite Implementation Support

  • Scaling the DCMP in East Texas

implementation of mathematics pathways is most effective when efforts are coordinated across institutions while still allowing for local decision making on how the pathways are operationalized. Monitoring depth of implementation of reforms under these conditions is a daunting task, especially when there is not a statewide policy mandate or significant funding for institutions. Collecting information about implementation practices is a further complexity.

The Texas Success Center (TSC) has addressed these challenges related to implementation by highlighting exemplary practices among colleges and motivating continuous improvement. TSC supports Texas community colleges in a variety of ways including evaluating, supporting, and scaling ongoing efforts to improve student success rates.

With the passage of Texas HB 2223 in Summer 2017, the Dana Center launched an extensive series of technical assistance efforts. HB 2223 mandates that all public higher education institutions in the state use co–requisite models to deliver developmental education. The challenges in designing and implementing new models for course delivery, combined with the aggressive implementation timeline required by the new law, mean that many institutions may struggle to reach compliance. The Dana Center aims to help institutions by offering effective tools and strategies to reach each implementation milestone. Learn more about the Dana Center’s HB 2223 technical assistance efforts.

Through a grant from the T.L.L. Temple Foundation, the Dana Center supports accelerating the impact of the Dana Center Mathematics Pathways (DCMP) in Deep East Texas. College completion rates in this region are far below those of Texas and national figures. Mathematics is a particular challenge for students in Deep East Texas: Currently, 68 percent of high school seniors are not ready for college math, according to the Texas Education Agency. The Dana Center seeks to improve the implementation of the DCMP model and its alignment to the K–12 sector, with the goal of increasing the number of students graduating from high school ready for college math and improving their college success.

Institutional Action in Texas: Key Resources

The commitment between the Dana Center and TACC to support higher education institutions with the implementation of multiple mathematics pathways in Texas opened the door for systemic change across multiple levels of the system (e.g., state, institution, classroom).

In 2013, nine community colleges began working closely with the Dana Center as active collaborators on the implementation of the DCMP model. As of 2016, support for the implementation of the DCMP model has grown to include all fifty Texas community colleges and many Texas universities. The Dana Center developed tools and resources to help institutions make informed decisions about implementation of the DCMP model based on their local needs.

Below are key Dana Center resources for Texas institutions:

Transfer Resources

Due to Texas’ vast size and number of public two–year and four–year institutions, achieving full–scale implementation of mathematics pathways depends on coordinated action at many levels of the system. Specifically, coordinated action is necessary to support transfer students across sectors of education (e.g., universities, colleges). The Dana Center’s tools and resources can assist institutions with transfer and applicability.

“Community colleges in Texas are committed to providing rigorous and relevant mathematics for our students’ success. To meet this challenge requires innovative solutions through collaborative strategic partnerships with our school districts, universities, legislature, and philanthropic partners. With the guidance and support of the Dana Center Mathematics Pathways, these ambitious dreams will be achieved.”
