Welcome

Stakeholders in the Southeast Texas region work collectively to create seamless mathematics pathways aligned across institutions for all P–16 learners. Key leaders from regional community colleges and universities serve as a leadership team to work with the Dana Center Mathematics Pathways (DCMP) regional coordinator to address shared issues, and to problem–solve across systems with a goal of improving student completion.

Current Focus

As a nascent regional collaborative, the focus of the Southeast Texas regional group for the 20172018 academic year is to set goals and priorities for collective impact. In addition, with the passage of HB 2223 requiring Texas colleges and universities to offer corequisite remediation for developmental students, another focus is to share successful practices and to provide regional professional development opportunities to meet the mandate of HB 2223.

In the 2017–2018 academic year, stakeholders in the Southeast Texas region are focused on achieving the following goals:

  1. Create a prioritized agenda for collective impact on issues affecting the scaling of mathematics pathways across the region; and
  2. Provide professional development opportunities, including sharing successful practices and regional leadership to support successful implementation to meet the requirements of HB 2223.

Through regular meetings, the leadership team will prioritize strategies to fully implement mathematics pathways across the region and set an agenda for collective impact. Support for implementing co–requisite remediation at the institutional level is being offered through a variety of professional development activities.

San Jacinto College offers models of a single–semester, co–requisite remediation option via four mathematics pathways (see selected resources below) as well as a two–semester, co–requisite remediation option for part–time students.

For more information on the Dana Center’s efforts to align K–12 and higher education mathematics pathways, see the Mathematics Launch Years Toolkit. This toolkit consists of three briefs intended to support districts and higher education systems in streamlining students’ transition from high school to college.

Three professional development workshops have been offered in the region to support implementation of mathematics pathways and co-requisite remediation.

In Spring 2017, Houston Community College hosted regional teams for a day-long learning opportunity focused on co-requisite remediation and the role of mathematics pathways within the broader context of guided pathways. Detailed resources and handouts may be found on the TACC website.

Lee College hosted a two-day meeting in Fall 2017 to deepen the discussion of and planning for meeting the mandate of HB 2223 for co-requisite remediation. After hearing from national leaders, campus teams from each institution worked on the key elements needed to support the co-requisite model, such as placement, co-requisite structures, course content, and staffing.

The Dana Center, in partnership with the Texas Success Center and Complete College America, facilitated a one–day meeting hosted by the Lone Star College System. This February 2018 meeting focused on co-requisite remediation for both English and mathematics.  Detailed resources and handouts may be found on the TACC website.

Selected Resources:

The Southeast Texas regional mathematics pathways leadership team, consisting of key leaders from the colleges and universities in the region, held an initial meeting in July 2017 to share updates on institutionallevel mathematics pathways work and to set priorities for the coming year. The leadership team met again in October 2017. The team continues to work with the DCMP regional coordinator to guide the regional work on mathematics pathways.

Regional Organizations

Texas Gulf Coast Consortium of Community Colleges

Mathematics pathways initiatives at local institutions, which are aligned to the core of the consortium’s work, support student success. This consortium brings together the community colleges in the region to further the mission of educating the region’s workforce through career and technical education, and working to provide foundational coursework for transfer.

West Houston P–16 Council

The mission of the West Houston P–16 Council is to promote success across the educational continuum in West Houston through the broadest collaboration of institutions and organizations and to serve as a model for the state. Two member institutions, Houston Community College and the University of Houston–Downtown, link our mathematics pathways work with this P–16 initiative.

United Way of Greater Houston

United Way MATH (Mastering Algebra Together Houston) brings together United Way of Greater Houston and ConocoPhillips to improve Algebra I completion rates in six area schools. This initiative provides a link to key community and industry partners in support of success in mathematics in our P–12 learners.
